Why this matters for your trip
Most travel content tells you to "rent a car in Quebec City." That's outdated advice for 2026. Saint-Roch is at the geographic and cultural center of everything worth visiting - and you save the car rental cost ($60-100/day), parking fees ($25-40/day in Old Quebec), and the stress of urban driving.
The only reason to rent a car: day trips to Ile d'Orleans (20 min away, see our Ile d'Orleans day trip guide) or Montmorency Falls. Even then, a half-day rental or a guided tour is often cheaper.
Pro tip: combine walk + funicular
The Lower Town to Upper Town transition (Saint-Roch to Old Quebec) is downhill on the way in (15 min), uphill on the way back (15-20 min). Best strategy: walk down in the morning, take the funicular ($4) or bus #800 RTC up at the end of the day when you're tired. Best of both worlds. Prefer the view to the climb?
